John Young - Managing Director

Founder of the MPLC and for 26 years has specialised in underwriting international medical professional liability business. Prior to the MPLC, he was Managing Director/CEO of a Lloyd’s underwriting company, which he co-founded in January 1989 following a successful management buyout. John has a strong understanding of the international market, the legal and claims environment and the needs of the international corporate sector.

Dr John Hickey - Non Executive Director

Formerly an anaesthetist, John worked for the Medical Protection Society Ltd (MPS), the world’s largest indemnifier of healthcare professionals, for 22 years gaining experience of clinical negligence in a variety of international jurisdictions. He lived and worked for MPS in Australia for three years and set up MIPS in 1988. He has particular experience in developing schemes for indemnifying corporate bodies internationally, for example, Singapore Health, Isle of Man DHSS, the major pathology laboratories in South Africa, hospitals in the Caribbean and government schemes for junior doctors in Ireland.  In 1994 he led the joint MPS / Willis Corroon team that designed, implemented and managed the Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts (CNST - a mutual pooling arrangement to protect NHS Hospital Trusts against claims of negligence). John was Chief Executive of MPS for five years prior to his retirement in 2007 following which he assumed the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors of Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust and joined the Board of the MPLC as a non-executive Director. He has written and lectured widely on clinical negligence risks.

Steve Ellis - Finance Director

Steve started his career at GEC plc in 1980. After leaving GEC plc he moved to Fisons plc in October 1987 where he qualified as a Chartered Management Accountant. Moving into CAMAS plc (now Aggregate Industries) in 1989 he held a number of senior finance positions, finally as Group Business Development Executive. In 1997 he moved to become Finance Director for a subsidiary of the United Carriers Group before being promoted to become its Group Finance Director in 1999. In 2000 he moved to be Finance Director of the principal subsidiary of Metroline plc before again being promoted to become its Group Finance Director in 2003. Steve is a commercially focused senior finance professional. He joined MPLC in September 2005 and was appointed as the Finance Director in February 2006 and Compliance Officer in 2010.

Matthew Sawyer - Director

Having originally worked as Office Manager for a firm of UK solicitors, Matt worked within the finance department of two UK companies.  In June 2003, he joined the MPLC as a trainee Medical Malpractice Underwriter and has progressed through the company to become the head of the underwriting and claims departments.  Matt was appointed a Director of the MPLC in January 2009.

Naomi Youngman - Claims Consultant

Originally a Nurse and Midwife, Naomi is a Barrister with an honours degree in Law and 5 years' experience at the independent Bar in London. She joined the MPS in 1995 and subsequently assumed the role of Director of Claims and Legal Services, managing a division of 50 staff, including 21 lawyers.  She had responsibility for the provision of medico-legal services, claims management and claims database, responsibility for internal and external legal panels and for the appointment of firms to the panel. She has experience of claims management within the UK and jurisdictions outside the UK including Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, South Africa, Hong Kong, and Republic of Ireland.
